What your child will learn in virtual programs

Technological skills. Each program and instructor will hold classes and supply feedback through different means. Kids receive instruction and present their work through software such as Google Classroom, D2L, Zoom, or Google Meet. With practice, children become well-versed in each of these. Current job markets seek candidates with sound technological skills. Virtual learning prepares children for this.

Time management. Kids work at their own pace in online environments, which leads to an improvement in time management skills. By setting plans, goals, and creating outlines for success, kids include class time, practice, and other responsibilities within their daily agendas. Having a work schedule such as this helps children achieve balance within their routines.

Listening skills. With reduced hands-on instruction, students receive instruction verbally. This  challenges their listening and comprehension skills. Tasks are completed correctly when students listen attentively to instructions. Good comprehension skills improve children’s work ethic, as they learn to ask relevant questions that improve their skills.

Independent problem solving. The online format regularly requires children to resolve problems on their own. With the absence of an in-person instructor, kids are encouraged to identify issues with their work and seek complementary solutions. Kids learn to make decisions confidently and with good judgement. The inclusion of family members assists with this as well, as parents provide the encouragement with which children can resolve issues independently.

    The benefits of online programs

Individualized learning. With the constant advancements in technology, learning online is more effective than ever. In most online meetings, breakout rooms and private chats are available to students. This allows children to converse one-on-one with their instructor to receive immediate help or feedback. An individualized education structure is known to improve the productivity of its students, as children are more engaged during class.

Engages family members. In online programs, parents are involved in the learning process, as they witness their children’s strengths and weaknesses. For kids, it is comforting to know that their parents are present to provide support, direction, and encouragement. Some online camps require parental involvement during complex activities such as cooking or science experiments.

Convenience. Online learning is a great fit for parents who find it difficult to transport children to and from after-school programs. A more convenient option, virtual learning also opens pathways for parents to enroll their children in courses unavailable in cities near them. Children have the opportunity to learn new skills they otherwise would not have.

Retention rates increase. Since children have the opportunity to work at their own pace and without distractions in online programs, their retention rates soar. To be precise, studies have shown that virtual learning increases retention rates in students by 25%-60%. For children enrolled in educational programs, such as test preparation or tutoring, these statistics prove important. Academic performance increases with higher retention rates, as students are able to study and perform better in subjects that require memorization such as math or science.

It’s a common misunderstanding that virtual instruction is less in-depth than in-person instruction. In fact, in virtual learning settings, children receive the same education from the comfort of their home. Children will complete the same assignments and learn the same skills as they would in in-person classes. In some cases, children may find it easier to learn from home due to a lack of distractions.

Questions to ask while reviewing online programs

    • What tools/equipment/attire should be purchased before programs begin? Are there brands instructors recommend?
    • How many hours a week should kids spend practicing outside of class?
    • What softwares should be downloaded before class begins?
    • How often will children receive feedback? How quickly will feedback be provided?
    • Do children have the option to schedule one-on-one meetings with instructors if they have difficulty?
    • What credentials do instructors have? Do instructors have experience teaching online?
    • How hands-on are parents expected to be with this class’s content?
