Taekwondo is a martial art from Korea. It teaches methods of self-defense involving the legs, feet, arms, and hands. Effective techniques are taught for kicking, punching, and blocking. Taekwondo also involves training the mind—to be calm, alert, and aware, among other things.
There are over 200 taekwondo camps in Canada. These camps offer a variety of different programs for kids of different ages and at different levels. In addition to self-defense, kids learn several crucial skills and traits.
For instance, at the lower levels (ages 3 to 5), kids are taught important motor and social skills. At the higher levels (ages 6 and up), kids learn the basic principles of taekwondo, namely, courtesy, integrity, perseverance, indomitable spirit, self-control, and modesty (and how to apply these principles to their lives).
Kids can also earn belts reflecting their proficiency in taekwondo. These belts include white to orange (beginner), green to blue (intermediate), and brown to black (advanced).
Taekwondo camps have numerous benefits for children of all ages. For starters, this martial art is a great way to exercise the mind and body. It thus promotes physical and mental well-being. Through specific mental and physical exercises, many children develop more focus, discipline, and positive attitudes. Moreover, learning the skills of taekwondo can also boost children's confidence and self-esteem, and reduce their stress and anxiety.
