All sports camps seek to develop skills, and competition can, understandably, seem like a natural aspect of that process. Olympia, too, is certainly about skill development, though leadership navigates the competitive aspect particularly well—not shying from it, but placing it within a context of personal goals and goal setting. “It’s not about getting to the top of the climbing tower,” says Nicole Nicole Christamtsis, “it’s about getting higher than you did the day before. That’s an important lesson.” It is, and one that Olympia is very adept at delivering. Many campers are true keeners, arriving at camp with some very sport specific goals, and intending to build upon their prior expertise. That said, not all do, and there is a place for them here, too. For many campers, Olympia is an opportunity to try new things as much as it is building on existing skills. The programs are vast, with facilities to match, and the instructors bring professional coaching to all of them. The focus throughout is on building confidence, independence, interpersonal skills, encouraging campers to meet new people and try new things. The experience is challenging and active, in equal measure to recognition and reward.

What is the signature part of Olympia Sports Camp? Is it the Norwegian-inspired main dining hall? Is it the Zip Line or the Big Tower? Is it the 5 basketball courts laid out with Oxbow Lake as a backdrop? For many, including Stand Up Paddling ( SUP) coach Ariel Amaral, it is the 1,500 feet of shoreline that captures the true beauty of life at Interlaken. The A Frame docking system that is the centre point of activity throughout the day and the many paddle boards, canoes, kayaks and sailboats make it an aspect of Olympia Sports camp that is the envy of most camps in Canada. And It's where Ariel shines.
It was the waterfront that attracted Ariel Amaral to Olympia in the first place. Never having come to Olympia as a camper, Ariel visited a friend who was a counsellor at the time, went for a quick swim, and that's all it took. Ariel has been coaching at Olympia coming up to ten years in the summer of 2025. She has never missed a year; not when her baby was born, not during Covid. What does Olympia mean to the Amaral household? To her the week at Olympia is as exciting as Christmas. In two wise words she calls Olympia "playful beauty."
The journey to Olympia and world level paddle boarding shows the quick learning and fitness, strength and athletic ability of Ariel Amaral. On a trip to Hawaii in 2008 at the age of 25, Ariel first tried SUP. By 2010 she bought her first board and then in 2011 she took up racing. By 2016 she was at her first World Championships.
Ariel's journey in SUP has taken her to Denmark, Peru, China and the U.S. The best part for Olympia is that every summer she shares her experiences with her campers. Her message deals with skill development as well as the important attributes of physical strength through committed training and the importance of the mental strength it takes to truly compete at your best.
Just a couple of weeks ago in Sarasota Florida both attributes were on display as Ariel competed in her first Master's category world championships, where she competed in the 100m sprints, 1000m technical and 11km ( 11km!?) distance race. With a jam-packed schedule Ariel finished a gut-wrenching fourth ( fourth in the world! ) in the sprint finals and then the next day she made the podium with a second place finish in the distance event. A world silver medalist! It was her first ever and she was overjoyed!
For those of us who have seen Ariel train on OxBow, her technique and power are impressive and the distance race is something we knew she'd be great at, and a silver at the worlds is something to be very proud of. Ariel, for sure, but also all those who work with Ariel at camp, where you instill the ideals of the hero's journey, and Ariel's journey is an example. We inspire each other. It's cool to know that her story about this year's I'm sure the journey will be one of Ariel's reflections to her campers in the summer of 2025.
Ariel loves the speed and power of sprint SUP, but there is proof that she also loves the challenge of distance Paddle Boarding. She loves the the challenges that the sport provides her in the numerous lakes across Ontario, including the beauty of nearby Kempenfelt Bay, and all the Great Lakes. She feels that there are some truly magical lakes in the north where the water is clear and the only distractions are wildlife . Her favourite moment in SUP was when she became the first woman to complete the 65km SUP4MS ( SUP for MS) charity event that took her across Lake Ontario.
Success has followed Ariel throughout her career. Starting her new pursuit at 25, SUP has been part of her life since 2008. She won a few SUP series races in 2013, and then in 2014 she earned the Woman's Series Overall Champion. She was the Women's Elite Champion in 2014, 2016, and 2017. In 2015 she used her success to organize the first Annual BLU WAVE PADDLE 4 THE CURE and they raised $15,000 in that first year.
Ariel's reflection on her journey says it all.
" I love to use SUP as a vehicle for adventure, speed, discovery, instruction, fitness, friends, and above all, family."
Ariel adds, " I gain significant motivation from Chris Bertish a South African author, surfer, and waterman. who is always pushing the boundaries of human possibilities. I hope to have Chris come speak at Olympia next summer. His message to the campers will be all about goal setting. Dream It, See It, Believe It, Achieve It."
The campers this summer are going to hear some great motivational messages with Coach Amaral. Sign up today! Congrats Ariel on the personal success and thanks for inspiring many others. And thanks for sharing.
I had the good fortune of meeting Brendan Morris, forever known as Brendo, many years ago as a counsellor at Olympia. When I was writing my book, and realizing the impact of staffing from around the world, I knew I wanted to interview Brendo and Martin Paul. Chapter Six of A Hero's Journey: Beyond Little Norway and Olympia Sports Camp. is entitled Allies and Ogres. Brendo has been an ally for hundreds.
Did Brendo find Olympia, or did Olympia find Brendo? Either way, the camp is a better place because of him.
Here is an excerpt from that interview from 2019:
Originally from Sydney, Australia, Brendo had just finished his undergraduate degree and was looking for what most international applicants are looking for: a combination of a life experience in a different culture and working in sports, something Brendo had done his whole life. He thought he would be heading to the U.S. but he found out getting into a camp in Canada had its advantages. With Canada being a commonwealth country, Australians could get a two year work Visa. He applied to Canada and Olympia was the first camp to give him an interview.
Brendo speaks highly of the camp that brought him to canada.
"Olympia represents a place I enjoy being at every day and the work I am doing. It's happened many times that I've had a tough couple of days here and I just go out on a kayak or canoe and look back at the camp and realize that I'm being paid to be here. It's been awesome and life-changing for me. Dave has given me opportunities to grow, with so many tasks added to my plate once he realized I was capable. He challenged me to take the bat off my shoulder, and I'm better for it."
Like many, Brendo's Olympia journey showed the flexibility and ingenuity of great leaders. Hired in 2015 to work ropes and be a sports counsellor, he originally thought he'd spend 4 months doing a working holiday. Plans change. He stayed on for the Fall season and became an outdoor education facilitator. The following year he was hired for the Spring and became a Unit Leader in the summer, which he did for four years. He then became outdoor education director and did that for three years. Lots of growth, but a much bigger change was coming.
Not only an Olympia stalwart who has given much, Brendo also brings his experience in Rugby to his adopted homeland. Here is Brendo at his jersey presentation with Canadian captain/ coach Aaron Frisby for the recent Men's over 30 World Cup of Touch Rugby. Even his journey to this team has a unique twist. Brendo moved to Canada permanently in 2019, when Olympia still had its offices in Markham. Spending his winters in the city, Brendo was looking for a social sports activity and found touch rugby, which he had played most of his life in Australia. In 2023 Touch Canada hosted tryouts for its World Cup teams and Brendo made the team, which gave him yet another global experience, competing in Nottingham England in July 2024. Just recently he also competed in the USA Nationals in Arizona, where Canada had its best-ever result, getting through pool play unscathed before losing to the eventual champions Utah in the semi finals.
The big move coming for Brendo is a side-benefit from COVID. With the camp closed to the public in 2020 and most of 2021 Brendo worked full time with facilities superintendent Bruce Ransom working on renovations. Brendo had always admired Bruce's efforts in maintenance of the camp and learned a lot from him over the years. Bruce always liked Brendo's passion for work and willingness to learn. When Bruce announced his impending retirement he pegged Brendo for the job as he thought Brendo would be the man to take over a position that has a huge place in Olympia lore.
Gerry Withers started working at Kiwanis Camp in 1948 and stayed on when Olympia bought the property in 1979. Bruce then took over in 1984. And now Brendo, the athlete and counsellor turned handyman, has responsibility for a property that includes 37.5 acres and 1,500 feet of shoreline. Brendo has a steep learning curve but a work ethic to match. He's learned to work the snow plow! He is joined by Bruce's right hand man Harold, from whom he has learned a lot. Brendo sees Harold as an unsung hero of Olympia.
This versatile Olympian is spending this winter renovating the bathrooms in C9-C13 and then the motel bathrooms after that. By the end of the winter all coaches cabins will match the bathrooms done in 2020. He is also excited for week 8 of 2025 ( Aug 17-23) when he will be directing a touch rugby program with help of some of his Team Canada teammates. Kids will learn the basics of touch rugby which will have transferable skills for Rugby and other sports. What a wealth of knowledge and experience these campers will learn from.
Brendo's journey now has him in his third year of winter living in Huntsville and he is settled in as a part of the Muskoka community. With his personable approach Brendo has made many connections in his new hometown.
Ten years ago Brendo left home for a four month working holiday whose journey is one of reliance and growth through change. HIs contribution to Olympia is fantastic, but for him to be able to represent his adopted country on the world stage is simply outstanding.
Hey Brendo! As Walker D would say, " Proud A Ya'll"
And I can hear you say " No Worries Mate"
The people we get to meet on our journeys.
