Our team of experienced staff will bring ROM's vast art, culture, and nature galleries to life through compelling storytelling, creative crafts, thrilling experiments, and more!
ROMKids transforms lives by helping children and youth understand the past, make sense of the present, and come together to shape our collective future. We foster learning, create knowledge, share global collections and research, and spark creative multidisciplinary exchange on topics within the intersecting worlds of art, culture, and nature. Children and youth will be inspired by engaging, diverse, and thoughtful educators; hands-on and experiential learning; imaginative art projects, activities, and experiments; and unique access to the galleries, collections, and ROM experts. ROMKids encourages community through accessible and inclusive teaching practices to help children and youth find a rewarding and safe place to learn and grow.

At the risk of stating the obvious, the resources available at the ROM are varied, vast, and unequalled, and the summer programs make the most of all of it. Like the museum collections, the summer sessions are based in social and natural history, with each session crafted around a specific theme. Simply attending the museum for a week is, for many kids, a thrill in and of itself. Developing a relationship with docents only furthers that; campers feel that they have a unique access to the staff and the collections, and, frankly, they do. The summer programs have been running for more than 75 years, and while it’s less obvious in the day-to-day, there’s a tradition here as well, one of growing an interest in the world around us, and building an engagement with others based in a specific set of curiosities. The camps are very professionally presented, with programs run by expert, experienced staff. Any way you care to cut it, there’s a lot to love.

ROMKids has a large team of staff ready to make your child's experience at camp safe, enjoyable, and fun! You can count on our staff to provide a warm and welcoming environment for all our campers. Children to staff ratios are 6:1 for 5 year-olds, 8:1 for 6–7 year-olds, and 10:1 for children 8 and older. Instructors hold degrees or diplomas and have professional and teaching experience. Assistants are senior secondary school or university students who have extensive experience in educational programs, and are often CPR certified. Many of our staff were former campers and volunteers themselves who loved their experiences and pass along their joy to current campers. Each group also has two or more volunteers to provide additional support.
I started volunteering with ROMKids in 2013 when I was 14. I first started volunteering because I wanted to fulfill my high school volunteer hours, and I had always enjoyed coming to the ROM as a child. Little did I know, seven years later, I would still be working with ROMKids as a staff member. I have worked as a volunteer, camp assistant, 1:1 assistant and lead assistant, and I can honestly say that ROMKids is one of the most positive workplaces I have worked in.
The instructors are some of the most skilled people I have met; their lessons are captivating, and their planned activities or crafts are insanely creative. I can’t think of another camp that would take their campers to the Humber River with the sole purpose of collecting fossils or a camp where children can meet the people who are in charge of curating their favourite museum gallery.
Of course, camp wouldn’t be able to run without the hardworking and passionate camp staff and volunteers. I have led numerous camp assistants and volunteers, and it is clear that everyone enjoys their job and that they are all there for the campers. Each staff brings their own personal touch to the way they run their group and the connections they build with their campers over two weeks most often remain throughout the summer (or even the following summer!). The dynamic between the staff, volunteers, and campers is exceptional. We may work in the same museum, but every day is different. Whether it’s the instructors who have planned a lesson about an artifact you didn’t give much thought about, or your campers who think of a new game or topic of conversation, there’s never a dull moment.
I am currently a master’s student in ecology at the University of Toronto and, without a doubt, my time with ROMKids developed the soft skills most often required in science (but aren’t typically taught in school). Notably, after spending years talking to kids aged 5 to 14 about various museum topics, I have become quite skilled at communicating both my own and other people’s science. In fact, science communication has become a large part of my work. I’ve always had a passion for natural history, but I would never have thought that I’d also have a passion for sharing stories about the natural world with others.
As a whole, ROM camp is a pretty special place and it’s no surprise that both staff and campers are excited to return year after year.
ROMKids is a real ROM treasure, an amazing resource for the museum community, for the city and GTA and, in the virtual world, also well beyond! The kids programs at the Royal Ontario Museum have been a big part of my family's experience for almost a decade now, and I couldn't think more highly of the curriculum and the leadership. My daughter Ellie first started attending programs and then Summer Club at age 4, and she has been a super-fan ever since. The programs have incredible flexibility, not only offering something for every interest, but they are also inclusive and accessible and welcoming. For younger children, every day of Summer Club is the most fun and grandest adventure in the most amazing playground a kid will ever have... for older students, there are no better role models than the camp assistants, counselors, and especially fearless leader Kiron. Indeed, it's the people who realize the potential of the collections and bring them to life, connecting kids to curators, stories, and art, culture, and nature.
I love that the director himself grew up at the ROM. Ellie always says she wants to follow in his footsteps! Under Kiron's experienced, expert, and fun guidance, the program continues to grow and evolve, as do families' relationships with it. In my opinion, it is one of the most impactful of all the institution's public-facing facets, because it is an investment in the future of the museum and in the generation that will inherit it. We are hugely grateful for all that ROMKids has offered us and can't believe how lucky we are to have such a gift right in our own backyard!
I really enjoy going to the ROM camp because it is one of my favorite camps and it holds a special place in my heart. To fully understand why I enjoy the ROM camp so much we must first go back to when I first started attending in 2014. Although I was young aged 7 at the time, I was immediately impressed by how much fun it became to learn about different things, I was also impressed by how the time was managed. I never felt like there was any time I wasn’t doing anything or not having fun. There was never a dull moment when I went to camp. When I was a bit older, we visited curatorial, I loved it because I saw things I never saw before and always learned something new about either history, science or how the museum works.
When I went to camp, I was astounded by the friendliness of the staff, from security guards to camp staff everyone was friendly and pleasant to talk to. I really appreciate the camp staff as they helped me feel included as a person with a disability. A couple of years ago I was chatting with some camp staff about the museum and its exhibits and eventually the Stairs of Wonders came up as the only exhibit I had never been to, due to the fact that I am in a wheelchair. After a couple days of preparation, the staff came up to me and asked if I was willing to go on the Stairs of Wonders with them and if I could ask my parents for permission to take me. My parents accepted and the next day we went up the stairs. It is an event born out of kindness by the staff and I am forever grateful and will never forget the experience.
In conclusion, I really love ROM Camp and wouldn’t hesitate to come back even as a volunteer or a staff member. I wish I could go back sooner and be able to return home with some more great stories.
