Here's what makes Storytelling for Mental Health stand out

The Aakowa Parables Inc., as a brand, has spent nearly 20 years using literature, live theatre and film as a tool for self-reflection. As an extension of the company, the Storytelling for Mental Health program has been serving youth at Covenant House in downtown Toronto since 2023, as a volunteer service, successfully helping young people 16yrs+ through homelessness and mental health struggles. As an extracurricular program for the general public, youth will create stories that reflect what they think and how they feel about the world, and then have the opportunity to watch they have created in a live performance using professional actors.

    Programs and Sessions Calendar

This program is unlike any other, because it caters to the creative introvert. Not everybody wants to be in front of the camera. This program is for young people who will enjoy the behind-the-scenes work to put together a story for presentation to an audience. In the development of scripts, we'll try to understand the motivations of human behaviour, by asking ourselves questions about our own reality, and then place those ideas into characters and plot. We'll work with professional actors to ensure they capture our vision, and there is nothing better than presenting what is in your head for audiences to see!

    Director's Message

As children grow, we use storytelling as a tool to teach important life lessons. Yet, as we get older, we tend to only look to be entertained. As a writer and director, I have always aimed to achieve both. Storytelling for Mental Health is a youth program for writing and directing that stems from this mission to use stories that will inspire and encourage young people through the art of storytelling. In the process of development, I enjoy placing young people in the shoes of characters that might be outside the scope of their own norm. It's exciting to see what happens as they dig for the motivations and purpose for why different decisions will be made by their hero's, or what in their past makes the villain who they are. Without really noticing, the youth discover more about themselves as they analyze the story. They shine light on areas of their thinking that they never considered before. In a time when the world is throwing many challenges at us, young people especially, this is a program specifically to help combat issues of mental health. Generally speaking, it's very exciting when young people are able to share what they have created in their mind, and see it performed on stage. There is a sense of joy and pride and sense of accomplishment that builds self-esteem that they can carry with them to other areas of their life.
