As an extracurricular-afterschool program, Storytelling for Mental Health is specifically for teens interested to develop their art of storytelling for theatre and/or film. They will work and share ideas in a small group, crafting a professional script and go through the detailed process of character and story development. In the end, they can use the learned tools to generate their own scripts in the future.

The process of creating a story is an exercise that allows us to analyze our own beliefs and thoughts through the characters and plots we create. With this program, participants are given the platform to express their own truths about the world in a healthy manner among their peers, in benefit of their mental health. As a group, they will attempt to create a theatrical or film masterpiece!

The finished script will potentially be used by The Aakowa Parables Inc. in its online platform, live theatrical events and/or submitted to film festivals, where youth participants will be credited professionally for their work as writers. Winter program runs: January to April | Summer program runs May to August | Fall program runs September to December.

Important Notes:

  • Pay in 4 instalments of $75, with option to cancel after two instalments for any reason.
  • Writing sessions are a mix of in-person and conveniently online.
  • Maximum of 6 participants per group, ensuring all ideas are heard and proper attention is given to each participant.
  • Individual writing coaching available for each participant for duration of term
  • Select scripts will be presented in a live theatrical event for the public, called Theatre Masterminds, using professional actors. Participants will be invited to attend and publicly credited.
  • Select scripts will be made into short films and submitted into film festivals by The Aakowa Parables Inc., where participants will be credited as writers on the project.
  • Select scripts will be put onto the aakowa.com catalog of stories. Professional credits given for youth participants as writers.
  • At the end of each completed script, each participant is encouraged to share their thoughts about what their created story offers as thoughtful insight.

Character Development: This program helps build the following traits

  • Creativity: Youth will develop new and fresh characters and plots for an original theatrical or film script with ideas based on how they view the world. They will feel empowered to use their imagination, seeking creative ways to tell the story they want to tell.
  • Interpersonal skills: Youth collaborate and bounce ideas off one another to create a theatrical or film script they all will love and can be proud of. Working in small groups, writing sessions ask for an ability to listen, encourage and communicate your own ideas in a healthy manner.
