Here’s a look at what kids learn in cooking camps and other benefits they accrue.
Cooking skills. Camps are targeted at kids 8 and older, up through the teen years. Camps run by professional chefs or cooking schools offer professional training in a safe setting. Daily schedules may revolve around different kinds of meals, various desserts, or cuisine by country. Camps may have cooking competitions that help kids understand their skills in context. Kids gain confidence in the kitchen.
Skills that carry over to other practices. Kids learn some basics of project management, following instructions, learning procedures, safety, and more. There’s chemistry involved in cooking, as well as nutritional science.
Discover creativity. Camps open up kids’ creativity, and they’re encouraged to experiment. Camp is a relaxed setting, where kids are free to make mistakes and explore different ways of doing recipes.
Fun in the kitchen. Camps make cooking activities fun for kids. That aspect alone is one they can carry with them for the rest of their lives, and expand upon, whether they only ever cook for themselves or their family, or go on to be the next great chef.
Be diligent when you research kids’ camp. Research cooking camps following the links above. When you reach out to camps, here’s a list of questions to help you choose:
