The Our Kids review of EcoStart Camp

    our take

There’s not much more rewarding than sending your child to a non-profit camp where they’ll learn how to be a better human. At Ecosource Climate Connections Day Camp, kids participate in a wide variety of hands-on activities related to the environment. This nature-focused camp shows campers how small changes have a great impact and how they are an important cog in the wheel. While empowering kids with fun programming both on- and off-site, kids also learn leadership skills, empathy, and how to build relationships. Camp counselors are professionals who are trained extensively in environmental education and have a great enthusiasm for helping the environment and teaching. They know how to teach touchy topics in a child-friendly way. The teaching kitchen is a highlight of the program, where kids learn valuable cooking and nutrition skills, as well as the importance of sourcing local ingredients. On top of that, they get to eat what they make. Trying new, healthy foods that they might not eat at home is a bonus for any parent.

I appreciated how smooth and positive my children's first summer day camp experience was. The communication with parents before and during the camp was excellent. Director's Message

    Dear Parents,

At Ecosource, we are passionate about engaging kids in environmental education. We feel that empowering the next generation of environmental leaders is not only important work but also incredibly fun and inspiring. Everyday we learn something new from our campers and strive to integrate their passions and talents into our programming. With screen time on the rise, we also prioritize getting kids outside to build meaningful connections with nature that help them de-stress and build relationships with the land and each other.

We would be delighted to engage your children in camp and look forward to rolling up our sleeves to make real environmental change alongside them.

    See you outside,

    Britt

    Stories

    • Anika's Summer Camp Journey

When asked about her experience of attending Ecosource’s summer camp, Anika shared that her favorite part was cooking in the teaching kitchen. The muffin recipe stood out the most for her. Made with zucchinis she and other campers harvested during their visit to the Iceland Teaching Garden, it ended up becoming a family favorite.  Anika’s mom, Christie, shared that before camp: “zucchini – it was never on her radar!”. They ended up taking the recipe home and making a batch together for a family cottage visit. According to Christie’s observations of Anika’s experience, camp “expanded her pallet a bit…that was a big win”. Seeing the plants and harvesting the food straight from the garden during camp helped put the concept of food systems into perspective.

Food aside, another main takeaway for Anika was her connection to the outdoors and nature. Admittedly, she was a fan of bugs and bees before coming to camp. Her experiences at camp helped her to be more comfortable in nature after learning about the important role pollinators and creatures play in our ecosystem.

Candidly, Christie shared: “I had no expectations to be honest. I put her [Anika] in the cap because it was close to where we live. I was pleasantly surprised with all the things she got out of it – we got more out of it than I was expecting.”
