What do kids learn at baking camp?

Kids and teens find a fun, new hobby through baking camp. They learn to navigate their way safely around the kitchen, for starters. They also learn how to use common baking utensils and appliances. They also learn baking terminology related to recipes and confection-creation, such as the difference between ‘folding’ and ‘stirring.’ Over the course of camp, kids and teens make cookies, cakes, and breads with other aspiring bakers.

Baking and decorating camps are a chance for your child to challenge their creative skills. Using buttercream, fondant, various piping tips, and other fun decorating accessories, kids and teens make yummy treats visually appealing. Sweet and savoury foods baked during camp can be brought home and shared with the family. 

At more advanced camps, kids prepare more sophisticated confections. They work with a greater variety of utensils and appliances such as ovens, stoves, mixers, and blenders. Operating some of these appliances can be hazardous, so trained chefs or teachers instruct campers on the proper ways to use all appliances. Kitchen safety is a primary lesson in all baking camps, as kids learn to prevent injury when using hot and sharp tools. 

Some advanced camps may require that your child has previous baking experience. In some cases, baking camps are offered through virtual formats. Virtual baking camps allow children to become comfortable with their own kitchen, as well as its utensils and appliances. Prices for baking camps typically start at $150, though more advanced camps will cost more, of course.

Baking and decorating camps give children the chance to try something new and exciting. Other benefits kids gain from baking camp include:

• Math and science skills gained. A side-effect of baking camp is fundamental math and science skills used. Kids learn how to measure and weigh ingredients, as well as how to read, add, and subtract fractions. Similarly, your child also learns the basic components of a recipe and how ingredients cause chemical reactions that create delicious baked goods.
• Practice healthy living. Although many sweet and savoury desserts aren’t necessarily health conscious, baking camp does help kids and teens gain a deeper understanding of nutrition.
