Reading programs are a mixture of general reading camps and tutoring programs. At general reading camps, children participate in fun, bookish activities such as story analysis, annotating, and literary discussions. Children also study etymology and related studies in reading courses.
Tutoring programs include the same activities but focus on children’s academic success. These programs often include reading comprehension tests and one-on-one help from certified educators. Preparatory courses for entrance exams and compulsory standardized tests, like the SATs or the OSSLT, are available as well. Academic programs also educate students in areas as diverse as literary devices, reading strategies, and grammar and punctuation rules.
Children explore genres in fiction, nonfiction, and classical literature. In some camps, the focus is on dissecting film adaptations of popular series like The Hunger Games or Harry Potter. Through this, children dive deeper into analyzing themes, character, point of view, and other story components. Prices for reading camps average around $400, though affordable programs are available for under $100. French-immersion programs are available as well.
Advanced reading programs have one goal: to make reading fun. Here, children explore unique novels, short stories, and poems during camp. By exploring various genres, kids identify which genres and styles they most enjoy. These camps inspire kids to build daily reading habits outside of camp. Reading daily can improve children’s vocabulary and comprehension skills.
Some advanced reading camps integrate writing and public speaking into the curriculum. This is a great way for students to take reading and apply what they’ve learned. Camps’ combination of joy and practicum makes them a starting point for a lifetime of learning.
Kids learn just how fun reading can be in these programs. Here are some things kids can expect from their camp:
