    Focusing on development of the whole girl, Girls Inc. Durham is part of a North American network of programs. Wanting to empower girls with solutions for issues they will inevitably face, the program focuses on building girls up and equipping them with skills to overcome barriers. Girls Inc. is a sisterhood of girl-only spaces where girls can feel safe and supported and grow as they should to their full potential. Everything they do is based on research and done by trained professionals. Teaching about healthy living, academics, and life skills, girls experience life-changing moments that seriously alter their paths in life. The programming is age-appropriate, but it can get deep. Sexual violence, bullying, and financial hardship are all hard to talk about topics that aren’t avoided here, because they need to be addressed. Girls have a safe space to learn and ask questions, while addressing their own experiences and moving forward.

    My daughter is a new person after camp

    My daughter did not have the ideal start at Girls Inc. She had a hard time managing through her emotions and she put herself down a lot and it came out in angry outbursts. As difficult as it was, the counsellors never gave up on her!! What was supposed to be a two-week stint became 5 weeks! She didn’t want to go anywhere else. She is a new kid. She helps others, thinks more positively and she tries more things because I think her confidence has come a long way. She is happy.     Our girls spent two weeks at camp this summer and absolutely loved it. What an amazing experience for them both. The tearful goodbyes from campers and counsellors alike told the story of a week spent making close and meaningful relationships.     I have two Daughters currently participating in the Girls Inc program, Girls Inc is a fantastic resource and space for my daughters … They are engaged with their being, their work and their possibilities. My eldest daughter has been with Girls’ Inc. since she was four years old and her life motto to this day is SMART, STRONG and BOLD…. She truly lives by this, she is confident and approaches the work with strength and self-assuredness. My younger daughter has always been shy and more reserved….     Both daughters LOVE this camp

    I have two daughters, 7 and 11, and it’s hard to find a camp that they will both enjoy at the same place. They both didn’t want to go but their minds were changed after the 1st day of summer camp. They LOVE it!     Director's Message

    Girls Inc. of Durham is a part of Girls Incorporated, the North American network of over 88 Girls Inc. affiliates, providing more than 140,000 girls across the U.S. and Canada with life-changing experiences and solutions to the unique challenges girls face. 

    Today, girls continue to encounter significant obstacles to their well-being and success.  In fact, right here in Durham: 570 teen girls become pregnant every year; 78% of girls under age 17 are unhappy with their bodies; 1 in 5 children live in poverty; and most startling of all perhaps, is that 1 in 4 girls will be the victim of childhood sexual abuse. Every day, in communities across the Durham Region, Girls Inc. inspires girls to be strong, smart, and bold, providing real solutions to the unique issues girls face.  The Girls Inc. Experience consists of the people, environment, and programming that, together, empowers girls to succeed.  Trained staff and volunteers build lasting, mentoring relationships in girls-only spaces that are physically and emotionally safe and where girls find a sisterhood of support with shared drive, mutual respect, and high expectations. Hands-on, research-based programs provide girls with the skills and knowledge to set goals, overcome obstacles, and improve academic performance. Through curriculum-based in-school classes, after-school programs, summer and March Break day camps, workshops, seminars, and community events, Girls Inc. of Durham served over 822 girls aged 6 to18 from Oshawa, Whitby, Pickering, and Ajax in 2021 during the pandemic.
