While directing, acting, and screenwriting are the most obvious activities found at film camps, kids are in for a surprise as they learn about more movie-making roles. Jobs in set design, prop handling, cinematography, sound, makeup, and costume design are all included in camps that teach film creation. There’s something for everyone!
As they progress from writing to storyboarding to casting and shooting, kids learn valuable storytelling techniques and recognize how all components of film add to a more compelling story. Campers produce short films at camp, as well as stop motion, animation, or claymation films. Some specialized camps educate children on the art of post-production, where students learn about green screens, VFX, and sound editing. Marketing and distribution activities are also taught in film camps. Kids challenge their arts and crafts skills to make posters and market their movie to friends and family.
Consult camps above for specifics of what they teach.
While some filmmaking camps welcome children as young as 6 years old, most camps are directed towards older children from ages 10 to 18+. The average filmmaking camp costs $300 to $500, though some camps may be double this price.
At advanced filmmaking camps, kids learn skills necessary to pursue filmmaking as a career. As they work with professional equipment, software, and other tools, kids learn how their own skills and passions fit with their aspirations. Some more advanced filmmaking camps prepare students for submission into film festivals or other competitions. Students are exposed to the professional industry, meet with experienced directors, producers, and writers.
Collaboration is key in filmmaking camps. Directors, storyboard artists, writers, editors, and actors come together to produce and prepare their short films. Kids have the opportunity to assume leadership roles during this time and learn to manage conflict, communicate effectively, and compromise with others to produce their best work.
At filmmaking camp, kids gain many new skills to help them grow as artists and individuals. Some things children find in these camps include:
