(5) Overall experience

Wholesome Character is a life-changing camp! They teach all sorts of real-life skills from leadership to confidence! My fondest memory of participating in this camp is learning about comfort zones and then being able to apply it to the real world. We were given the opportunity to write a speech to try out for valedictorian of the grade 8 class. However, I was unsure at first but remembering the lesson on the comfort zone and confidence pushed me to try. To my surprise my speech was good and I was chosen to give the valedictorian address for my graduation.

(5) Unique value

This camp is a community of our leaders of the future. I would describe it as a safe space where kids are encouraged to ask questions about the topics discussed and even apply what they have learned throughout the week. In my opinion, what sets this camp apart are the leaders of the camp and the volunteers. They put a lot of time and resources into ensuring that the kids have the best experience and ensure that they have fun and have also learned some lessons that they can hold onto.

(5) Program quality and activities

The program is well thought out and all activities contribute to the theme of the day. The activities engage critical thinking while also thinking outside of the box. For instance, we had a lot of group activities that pushed me to learn to work together with other campers we didn’t know at the time, however, it was interesting to see how differently and creatively we all thought. The program overall encourages the campers to be more confident in themselves and also become the leaders they are meant to be.

(5) Social dynamics and experience

I am still in contact with many people from camp. We did a lot group activities at the Wholesome Character camp and that gave us a chance to make connections and memories. Our camp experience helped us foster these lasting connections by showing us how much we all had in common and we all became friends very quickly. Some of us didn’t even go to the same schools but we always looked forward to seeing one another at camp. After becoming alumni we stay in touch through social media!

(5) Skills and growth

Wholesome Character played a big role in my personal and professional development. The camp brought me out of my shell when it came to putting myself out there for more leadership positions in my community. I acquired many leadership skills and also character traits like courage, resilience, and risk-taking. Being a student I still use all these skills in the real world whenever I work on personal or work projects.

(5) Reflections and advice

My advice to future campers would be to learn as much as you can because Wholesome Character is invested in seeing all the children grow and become the best version of themselves. Also, have fun and make memories with your peers because those weeks were some of the best I can remember from my summer breaks. A lesson I learned from Wholesome Character that I would share is you don’t have to be born with confidence but you can learn confidence!

Before camp, my son was a little hesitant. He’s a quiet 8-year-old, so he wasn’t sure what to expect. I was conflicted too—should I send him to his usual sports camp or try something different? ...
