Students will come to the University of Toronto – St George campus for a week-long day camp. Throughout the week, students will explore various mathematical topics in a fun, interactive, and hands-on way. Each group has a different focus.
Grade 1/2 Summer Math Camp: Math Through History
In this camp, students will explore how math has shaped our world across centuries, from decoding hieroglyphs in Ancient Egypt to solving astronaut challenges during the Space Race. Students will approach fundamental math concepts through a balance of hands-on activities, games, and crafts, and pencil-and-paper math. Along the way, they’ll practice data collection and interpretation, addition and subtraction, skip counting, measurement and more through era-themed activities and projects.
Grade 2/3 Summer Math Camp: Building a World with Math - Architecture in Action
Step into the world of architecture and discover how math shapes the buildings and spaces all around us! In this camp, students will expand their understanding of math concepts through real world connections of architecture around the world and by designing, measuring, and building their own creative structures. Through hands-on activities, students will see how geometry, measurement, spatial sense, and patterning are used by architects and engineers every day. This camp will encourage critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork, helping students see math through the eyes of an architect.
Grade 3/4 Summer Math Camp: Math in Music
Music is everywhere - so is math! From the songs on the radio to the beat of your footsteps. In this camp, students will explore music through a mathematical lens. Students will explore harmonies, rhythms, scales, and more. We will cover topics related to algebra, fractions, patterning, and geometry. Students will also get the opportunity to make their own DIY instruments using household supplies! [No musical experience required)].
Grade 5/6 Summer Math Camp: Math Lab - Experiment, Build and Discover
Welcome to Math Lab where science and math come to life through hands-on experiments and exciting challenges! In this course, students will step into the role of scientists and engineers, taking part in exciting demonstrations, conducting their own experiments, and building creative structures that demonstrate scientific principles. Along the way, students will learn how math plays a vital role in chemistry, physics, engineering, and biology through observation, data collection, and data analysis.
Grade 7/8 Summer Math Camp: Math in Outer Space
Math in space is more than just rocket science (literally and figuratively)! Math is the foundation of much of our understanding of stars, planets and everything in between. In this camp, you will encounter the mathematical principles that make the cosmos tick and how math helps us make sense of our observations of it. Now is the time to shoot for the stars – and do some exciting math while we’re at it!
Grade 9/10 Summer Math Camp: Math in Visual and Spatial Art
In this course, students will learn the various visual applications of mathematics not only as an art form but also the applications in various industries, including mathematical research. The visual applications will expand upon the students understanding of a line and develop their spatial reasoning for their further studies. Examples include Euclidian constructions, tiling, tessellations, other geometric structures (both 3D & 4D), animations using Desmos, etc. Class structure will include many hands-on activities alongside many historical lectures that provide a stronger overall understanding of the historical context of mathematics and its development, providing motivation for further studies in math.
