In our CANSail 5&6 420 Race Program complex sailing skills are acquired and refined. Athletes in this program are members of the NYC Club 420 Race Team and work with our certified race coach to master sailing techniques to sail fast. During this month-long program participants train to compete in local and regional regattas. In additional to on-water training, theoretical topics are also covered, including racing strategy & tactics, rules and weather.
Regular weekly program runs from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday to Friday, however participants will also attend weekend regattas throughout the season. Parent participation for regatta travel is crucial to the success of the program and building a winning team. Participants must have completed CANSail level 4 or be able to demonstrate CANSail 4 level skills in order to register for this program.
In addition to our summer programming there are also Spring and Fall training opportunities available to practice sailing skills in the windier shoulder seasons.
Character Development: This program helps build the following traits
Resilience: Sailing involves constant adaptation - to the direction of the wind, the push of the current and the course you're on. Sailors learn resilience in coping with and adapting to the ever-changing conditions they face on the water. No two days in a boat or in our program are the same!
Responsibility: In our program sailors work with their teammate to rig and de-rig their boat and tune it to perfection every day. They learn to be responsible for their boat’s equipment, reporting any issues and keeping it in good condition.
