The Our Kids review of Engineering Outreach at U of T

    our take

Some camps are truly one-of-a-kind, and DEEP Summer Academy is one of them. Developed by the outreach office of the department of engineering at the University of Toronto, the intention was to offer an intensive STEM program for university bound kids. The resources on hand are as good as it gets, and there is a keen focus on involving girls within the program, inspiriting them to participate in areas where women remain underrepresented. The programming is advanced and challenging, and students from around the world apply to be accepted to the program. Sessions are taught by faculty of the university, and topics are cutting edge.

    Director's Message

The U of T Engineering's Outreach Office is committed to inspiring young minds through exceptional learning opportunities in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). For more than 20 years, our unique approach to education ignites a passion in youth for STEM, often leading students to achieve incredible things in university and beyond. We strive to develop programs that engage and challenge students while they discover new concepts in fun, interactive and memorable ways. We are particularly proud that our programs successfully connect girls and youth in underrepresented communities to subject areas they may not otherwise encounter.

    • DEEP Leadership Camp
This exciting one-week outdoor leadership camp takes place at Gull Lake in beautiful northern Ontario during the 2nd week of DEEP (July 11 to 15, 2011). The DEEP Leadership Camp will be hosted at Gull Lake, the University of Toronto’s Civil Engineering Survey Camp. This survey camp has been an important U of T tradition to undergraduate engineering students for over 90 years. The Gull Lake Survey Camp is located at the northern end of Gull Lake near Minden, Ontario. DEEP will be exploring Gull Lake for our second summer to engage in learning in a real Canadian wilderness experience! Engineers are often described as leaders of change and innovation. Being a good leader is an important part of being a good engineer. As a Leader-in-Training (LIT), you will participate in modules to develop your leadership potential and essential skills such as conflict resolution, communications and problem solving. These skills and tools will also help to enhance your self-confidence — another important attribute of good leaders. The Leadership Camp includes a range of training modules designed to prepare you to take on meaningful leadership roles in your school and community. These modules are further complemented by our surroundings at Gull Lake, enabling you to learn wilderness and survival skills hand-in-hand with an intentional leadership focus.
    • ENGage
The University of Toronto Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE U of T), in collaboration with the Engineering Student Outreach Office in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, has established a new interactive program for motivated students in grades 7 and 8. Engage seeks to foster an interest in engineering and science, while engaging participants in a range of personal development activities throughout the week-long program.
    • Jr. DEEP
University of Toronto's Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering offers also offers an engineering program for children in grades 7 and 8 titled Jr. DEEP. Jr. DEEP is modeled after our Da Vinci Engineering Enrichment Program (DEEP) Summer Academy for high school students. Jr. DEEP offers students at grades 7 and 8 the unique opportunity to learn about some of the most cutting-edge topics in science, technology, and applied science and engineering.
