The Our Kids review of Camp Tournesol

    our take

Camp Tournesol was founded in 2001 as a means of supporting language learning through the summer months, while also providing francophone environment for francophone campers. It is one of the truly dual-immersion programs in the GTA. Because of the language support, as well as the breadth of activities on offer, the camp has grown exponentially over the years, now including 9 locations and nearly thousands of participants through the summer season. The days are active, including team sports, games, as well as arts and crafts, drama, field trips, music—the full gamut of active, engaged camp programming. The camps also provide a unique environment for language learning, one beyond the classroom or school setting. For kids in French immersion, it’s a valuable opportunity to use the language less formally, building fluency and activity specific vocabulary.

    About Overnight Camps

"My daughter came back from the 2+3 camp overjoyed! She was sad when she learned there was an earlier session the week before. She would have loved to attend that one as well. Lesson learned - next summer sign her up for all overnights. Her progress in French is amazing. I can see the confidence evolving and she's definitely learning to communicate better. I'm actually sad that this is her last week at camp t until next summer." ... Show More

    About Overnight Camps

"My daughter Sophie just came back from 5 nights in Bracebridge. She had a wonderful time and the councillors were so energetic when we meet them at drop off and pick up. Sophie loved the camp and from the photos and the pictures it was great to see what they were doing. The blog and photos also were a great way to get more information out of Sophie. She often doesn't share a lot, so I could prompt her with "How did you enjoy sailing", "did you love taco Tuesday?" etc. I want to thank you and the councillors who worked very hard. I love that Sophie had a change to be immersed in French 24/7, participated in adventurous activities and were surrounded with a fantastic, fun, hard-working and responsible staff. Thank- you. ... About Day Camps

“This is the second year my son attended Camp Tournesol at the Bloor West location (this year for 2 weeks) and he just loves this camp! From the games and sports to the splash pad day and the lunches he raved about every night, overall a great experience! And we love it that he’s improving his French all the while. Personally, I love the daily Facebook and Instagram posts. Next year my daughter will also join. Looking forward to when they are old enough to attend the overnight camps (!) and also the Quebec trip (!!). Merci to everyone at Camp Tournesol.” ... Show More

The counsellors were kind and energetic, providing him with individual attention as well as providing a fantastic group atmosphere. Our son would come home everyday with a smile on his face, stories to share, and a growing vocabulary and love of French. We’ll definitely be sending him back next summer! :)” ... Show More

    About Overnight Camps

“I think it has been 10 years with CampT summer camps for my kids. We started with day camps in Mississauga and as the kids got older continue with overnight camps. Last 2 years Barbara attended Bracebridge camp without her brother, as he is too old now. She loves going there, she loves the location, activities and the chef of the camp kitchen :) And be aware... Barbara is planning on joining your team as CIT The counselors are amazing, full of energy, making sure that all campers are participating in daily activities. The huge thank you to all counselors, especially Sarah ;) See you next year!" ... Show More

    About CIT Program

"My son has been attending the Camp since Grade 1 and now he is a CIT. It has been a great experience for him and he always enjoys himself. The staff are very professional, put their all into the kids, and we have never had one issue. I am glad we can offer the same experience for our daughter especially since both my kids struggled with French in grade 1 and the camp helped them improve their French to the point they are very comfortable speaking it." ... Director's Message

My name is Martine Brouillet and I am founder and director of Camp Tournesol. I am a strong supporter of bilingualism and created this camp to fill what I viewed as being a void in Ontario for quality French-language summer camps. At Camp Tournesol, we provide an environment that supports and enriches the learning and exploration of the French language in Ontario. We strive to create a fun atmosphere in which your children can use their French verbal skills in the summer, outside of the classroom environment. Essentially, we want our campers to have fun and confidence, while speaking and practising their French. Our goal is that they change their perception of French and realize that it is not an academic topic but a living language and therefore decide to pursue french immersion at high school. We offer out of province overnight trips to French destinations such as Quebec, overnight weeks in Ontario, as well as day camps with several campuses across the GTA for children as young as 4 years old and up to 14 years old with our leadership programs. I continually look for way to enhance and grow our programs and welcome your feedback!

We hope to see your children next summer!

    Stories

    • Growing up with Camp Tournesol

I have been a camper at Camp Tournesol from the very beginning. As a camper, every summer I would look forward to Camp Tournesol because I got to see my friends and the same counsellors year after year. When I was too old to be a camper and had to choose to be a counsellor in training (CIT) or not go to camp, I automatically chose to become a CIT. I had had such a good time as a camper that I did not want the fun to end. As a CIT I learned the ropes of what it was like to be a counsellor; teaching different games, starting thousands of friendship bracelets for campers and most importantly showing the campers it is easy to have fun while speaking French. When it came time for me to be a counsellor I was all for it. My first year working as a counsellor was with people who had been my counsellor when I was a camper. They became my Camp Tournesol family. All the counsellors are extremely friendly and supportive, and when you or the campers, run into a problem they are there to help you out. I come back to work at Camp Tournesol year after year because I have developed friendships with all the other counsellors along with getting to see the same kids come back, see them grow and see their French improve. From camper to CIT to counsellor I have seen every aspect of the camp and I believe the best thing that Camp Tournesol offers to the campers is it shows them they can have fun speaking French.
