Thank you for your interest in Camp Chikopi. They will be in touch with you shortly.
Camp Chikopi has been a truly transformational experience for both of my sons, Gregory and Joshua. They first attended the camp in 2019 and immediately told us that this was one camp that they are definitely going to again next summer. Chikopi was the third overnight camp we have tried, so this statement was truly impressive. We felt that they returned home more confident, motivated, and resilient. It was as if the summer at Chikopi had given them a fresh start, they attacked their academic year with new energy and focus. Since then, Chikopi has remained a huge part of their lives, shaping their character and skills in ways I could not have imagined. One of the biggest impacts has been in their swimming. They both became significantly stronger swimmers at Chikopi, which played a role in their decision to pursue competitive swimming. Even now, at 16 and 18, they continue to compete at the provincial level. The endurance and technique they developed at Chikopi gave them an edge, and they often credit the camp for their success. Beyond athletics, the camp also helped them develop a strong work ethic. Both boys secured lifeguarding jobs during the school year, using their Chikopi experience in their job interviews. The friendships they built at camp have also been meaningful. They met kids from all over the world and have maintained those connections. In fact, they were so inspired by their Mexican friends at camp that they started learning Spanish on their own. Gregory is now on a 700+ day streak on Duolingo! These friendships, along with the shared experiences of early morning swims, epic competitions, and team challenges, have left a lasting impression on them. I also appreciate that Chikopi provides a complete break from technology. The no-phone rule is enforced, and I noticed how much happier and more energized they were when they came back. It is a rare opportunity in today’s world for kids to disconnect from screens and just be present in nature. Camp Chikopi has been so important to our family that my sons are now returning as CIT and Camp Counselors. Their experience at Chikopi has shaped them into responsible, hardworking, and adventurous young men. I would send them back in a heartbeat and highly recommend it to any parent looking for a camp that builds resilience, lifelong friendships, and strong character.
When we looked at other camps, none had the same combination of history, sports excellence, and character development that Chikopi offers. Many camps focus on either academics, outdoor adventure, or sports, but Chikopi blends all these. It is also known for its supportive but challenging environment, where boys are encouraged to push themselves but are also guided by experienced counselors and coaches. This was important to us as we believe in the importance of our children growing by overcoming obstacles and stepping outside their comfort zones. Another reason we picked Chikopi is its strong community. As we are an immigrant family that has been uprooted, this is very important. Parents and campers consistently speak about how close-knit and welcoming the camp feels. Reading reviews from past campers, we saw that Chikopi isn’t just a place to spend a summer, it’s a place that cultivates a sense of belonging. We felt that Chikopi gave our sons experiences they could never have gotten elsewhere. Their confidence grew, their swimming improved, and they learned how to work as part of a team. There were no hidden costs, and everything was communicated clearly. The camp is definitely an investment, but it is one that pays off in personal growth, skills, and lifelong friendships. Seeing how much our sons have grown from their time at Chikopi, we feel it was more than worth it.
When we initially chose Chikopi, it was for the swimming program. But once at camp, our sons got to experience so much more. They had the opportunity to try new sports like sailing, canoeing, cricket, and golf, activities they had never done before. The variety of experiences pushed them out of their comfort zone and allowed them to develop skills beyond the water. Both boys participated in endurance-building activities like the 12 km open-water swim and the all-day Rumbo adventure. These challenges helped them build resilience, teamwork, and mental toughness. They returned home with a stronger sense of discipline and an ability to push through physical and mental barriers. The structure of the camp allows the boys to develop their athletic abilities while also forming deep friendships. They have a lot of team events and competitions and as a result, learn how to support each other. One of the standout aspects of Chikopi is the quality of the coaching staff. Unlike many camps that rely primarily on teenage counselors, Chikopi brings in highly qualified coaches, many of whom are professionals in their fields. The camp also has former alumni, including Olympic-level athletes, who return to give master classes and work with the campers. This level of training truly sets Chikopi apart.
One of the best parts of Camp Chikopi for our boys was the friendships they made. They met lifelong friends from around the world and still keep in touch throughout the academic year. Because the camp is smaller in size, there is a very tight-knit community, and kids of all ages bond with each other in a way that is rare in our days. The dynamic between older and younger campers is special there is a real sense of mentorship and support. It probably helps that there are no screens that distract them from making real-life connections! Chikopi is also very inclusive. One summer, our boys told us about two very young boys from Japan, around 7 years old, who spent the entire summer at camp. They did not speak English and were homesick, but the other campers took them under their wing, cheering them on and helping them feel part of the group. By the end of the session, these boys were speaking English and were thriving. Last summer, there was a camper who could not swim at all at the beginning of his stay, but was able to complete a one-mile swim by the end of camp, thanks to the constant encouragement and support of the other boys. I was touched by the sense of pride with which my youngest son shared this story with us.
Chikopi taught our sons the true meaning of perseverance. One of their most challenging accomplishments was completing the 12 km open-water swim, known as the Mag swim, in 3.5 and 4 hours, respectively. The endurance, mental toughness, and determination required for this challenge left a lasting impact on them. They proved to themselves that they could push beyond their limits. Another summer, the oldest received an award for completing 100 miles of swimming during his stay. Beyond swimming, they grew as leaders and teammates. Encouraging fellow campers, supporting those struggling, and learning to overcome their own physical and mental barriers were just as valuable as any technical skills they developed. We truly hope that these lessons in perseverance and camaraderie will stay with them for life.
Camp Chikopi’s administration and staff are truly dedicated. The owner, Colette is deeply involved as this camp is her life, and it shows in how much care she puts into every detail. She is always responsive, whether it’s answering parent concerns or making sure each camper has a great experience. The counselors are mostly former campers themselves, which makes them invested in the camp’s culture and values. As I previously mentioned, the coaches are professionals, not just teenagers with summer jobs. Many are former competitive athletes, and some are even Olympic-level alumni who return to give master classes. This level of coaching is rare in a summer camp and gives the boys access to top-tier training. As a parent, I also appreciated being able to follow my kids' journey through the private Instagram page the camp runs. With parental permission, they post photos so you can see what’s happening, which is such a comfort when your child is away for weeks. Sending my children away for the summer was hard at first, but seeing them in those photos, smiling, thriving, and making friends gave me peace of mind. You don’t just get a vague newsletter or staged group pictures; you actually get to witness their daily adventures. It made me feel connected, even from afar. Although my sons didn’t face any issues, the camp is small and tight-knit, which means problems don’t get ignored. From what I’ve seen and heard, staff handles conflicts swiftly and fairly. Their emphasis on inclusion means no child is left out or overlooked. The supportive culture, combined with experienced staff, ensures that any concerns are addressed with care and understanding.
Chikopi provided a detailed packing list, and we followed it closely. It covered everything necessary, from sports gear to bedding, making it easy for parents to prepare. The camp was all about practicality, so there was nothing unnecessary that we packed. Although no electronics were permitted, the boys were allowed to bring their Kindles. Also, there were a few small "luxuries" that made their experience even better. One of them was bringing a few favorite treats for trading sweets, Frank’s Hot Sauce, and even fancy toilet paper, which was apparently valuable enough to be traded for desserts! For first-time campers, I would recommend labeling everything clearly. With so many boys sharing spaces, it’s easy for clothes and gear to get mixed up. Also, a few extra pairs of socks and an additional towel can be helpful since things can get wet often.
If you’re considering Camp Chikopi, go for it! It’s not a luxury camp, but that’s part of the magic as kids build resilience, confidence, and friendships that last a lifetime. Trust the packing list, but a few extras like their favorite snacks for trading can make things even more fun. Prepping with some extra swimming or outdoor activities can help first-time campers adjust more easily. Most importantly, encourage your child to embrace the experience. It will challenge them, but they will come back stronger, happier, and full of incredible stories.
