Thank you for your interest in The YES (The Youth Excellence Society). They will be in touch with you shortly.
Two of my children attend YES camp. They find camp week (and reunions) a chance to be free - be themselves and thrive in an accepting environment. They come home with a plethora of new connections, lessons that they apply to daily adversities and such nostalgic/happy memories. They greatly look forward to returning for more camp magic. I absolutely encourage them to attend each year, as time away, building relationships and just enjoying life is so important. As a parent, you want your child to have diverse and engaging experiences - The YES does that
I heard about this camp from a friend who had heard from another friend that it was a wonderful summer experience. We have been able to attend camp with support. Otherwise, our kids’ ability to attend would be in jeopardy. There were no hidden costs, and payment plans were helpful for when my kids were paying their own way (for reunions).
I didn’t have any specific expectations of activities - when they are at camp I want them to try new things and also be willing to step out of their comfort zones. The camp staff is very attuned to creating safe, caring connections with each camper and I trusted that. My kids loved the variety - performing in front of a crowd, theatrics, acts of kindness, outdoor adventure games and just down time on a couch or in the shade of the tree.
My kids have a degree of difficulty making friends and have found the week of camp to be an ‘arms open’ environment that they really feel supported by. Camp friends are geographically separated after their week together, but try to maintain connections until the next summer. They never reported any issues with bullying, actually the opposite. YES is radically accepting and celebrates differences in whatever form.
I think YES emphasizes social and emotional skills and life lessons, amidst typical camp activities. They learn leadership skills and how to take care of themselves. They grow in confidence and take with them lessons to lean into when going about their daily lives. Some of the water sports were new to my kids and some of the small group sharing and being vulnerable to peers was an area they grew more comfortable in.
I have had very positive interactions with camp staff. They are competent and communicative managers which is highly appreciated. They are also very caring about the experience of each camper. It is personal as well, but always within a professional relationship. Any conflict that I heard of (indirectly) was handled with discretion and in an efficient timeframe.
I don’t think there was much that we packed that went unused. I may have wanted to pack a few more towels as they are used for swimming and showering each day for a week and never get laundered. For first time campers, I would recommend bringing simply the things they requested.
If your child is looking for a week of pure fun - this is a great camp to attend. On top of that, life lessons, leadership skills, and a camp family are formed. The YES continues to be a highlight of the summer for my kids. One child is ready to start volunteering for the organization, because of its impact on them.
My child totally enjoyed this camp. It was her first time at a camp and away from home for a week. She enjoyed herself so much, she keeps talking about the camp to her friends, telling her friends t...
