Are you a teen who is 16 years old? Do you love camping and crafting and canoeing and kids? Are you thinking about growing your skills in the outdoors? Are you looking to build your work experience and resume while having a fantastic time doing meaningful work?

New this year, Red Wolf Camp is launching a Leader in Training (LIT) program to support teens in learning how to become leaders in the outdoor industry, while honing their skills and deepening their nature connection. As an added bonus, teens can also earn volunteer hours by participating in this program.

The Leader in Training program at Red Wolf Overnight Camp is designed for teens passionate about developing leadership skills, self-growth, and practical expertise in a wilderness setting. Participants will engage in comprehensive training, covering wilderness knowledge and skills, leadership tools for working with campers, and effective teaching and mentoring techniques. Program highlights include:

  • Staff Training: Join our staff training week to experience the same training and skill building that our staff do. LITs will learn the ins and outs of camp and participate in sessions in skill development, group management, mentoring and running an effective campsite.
  • LIT-Specific Training Components: Focused sessions on leadership development, advanced wilderness skills, naturalist knowledge, and adventure education. This includes advanced foraging, tracking, nature crafting and bushcraft skills. While many camps offer LIT programs, few provide the specialized outdoor skillset that teens will gain at Red Wolf.
  • Apprentice Time in Groups: Practical experience working with camper groups, applying teaching and mentoring techniques, and getting to lead sessions with kids, supported by staff.
  • Culminating Multi-Night Survival Trip: An extended survival trip to test and refine skills in a real-world setting. The group will have several days to prepare food to take, practice skills such as friction fire and shelter creation, and to create tools they might need while out on the land. This all culminates in a three day overnight where LITs will work together to live on the land with limited resources and input from their instructors

  • Resilience: Participants are encouraged to face new challenges, step outside their comfort zones, and learn from both successes and setbacks, building their ability to adapt and persevere in dynamic situations.
