This half-day Introduction to Technical Theatre Camp aims to develop students’ understanding and appreciation of the behind-the-scenes aspects of theatre and theatrical productions. The C.A. Smith Theatre, designed to operate as a professional theatre space with 700 seats and an up-to-date tech booth, is the perfect place for a student to begin to build an appreciation for the work that goes into the behind-the-scenes work of production. Students will learn to be safe backstage while exploring stage lights on the computerized ION lighting board and sound design using the Sennheiser professional sound system. Students will learn to operate the projection and fly lines and explore props, costumes and set design.

Instructor: Katrina Tashlikowich
Katrina Tashlikowich is the STS senior High Drama Teacher. She teaches drama and IB theatre arts for grades 9 through 12 and manages the C.A. Smith Theatre. Katrina completed an MFA in education and performance in 2012. For the last 25 years, Katrina has produced large-scale and smaller-scale musicals and plays. As a drama teacher with 25 years of experience, Katrina is committed to skill development in technical theatre. Through this introductory summer program, Katrina creates an environment where students not only discover the intricacies of lighting, sound, and set design but also help students actively develop practical, hands-on skills. Her approach is centred on fostering a love for the craft while providing a structured platform for students to enhance their technical abilities. From mastering the art of creating captivating lighting effects to creating sets that tell a story, participants in Katrina's programs develop skills that go beyond the theoretical, ensuring they leave with both knowledge and a newfound proficiency in the technical aspects of theatre. Under Katrina's guidance, the summer program equips students with the practical skills needed to bring the magic of theatre to life.
