Here's what makes Steamoji stand out

Steamoji is the STEM maker academy for kids training the next generation of builders, makers, inventors and entrepreneurs. We believe that the best way to prepare for a world of accelerating technological change is to train our children with the foundational skills and mindsets to build solutions to the problems of their future.

The Our Kids review of Steamoji

    our take

Steamoji was born out of a need to create a design maker space for kids who had progressed past the point of the basics normally offered in maker labs. Co-Founder Hank Horkoff felt that kids were getting too scared to try new things for fear of failure—and he knew failure was where the magic happens. Kids learn so many new things—and yes, they make mistakes—but come out of their mistakes with new ideas and better designs. Creativity is developed with fun projects that are taken home to show their parents, as well as parents receiving a short video where kids talk about what they’ve done. What makes Steamoji different from other camps is that it doesn’t just help kids become builders, makers, and inventors—it prepares them for the ever-changing world with a mindset to change the future. Not only will this help kids with future careers, but the skills they develop will help them through their daily lives.

    Excellent Program

We have our child in this program and it is excellent. It fills a niche between learning things that are abstract and building things to completion. It’s a well designed program and the instructors are very good.

    Wonderful Experience

The Steamoji program has been such a wonderful experience for my son! It's opened his world up and has changed his life right now in such a positive way! He's found something he's passionate about and he can't get enough of the program. He's excited about attending every Steamoji session and wishes he could do it every day! It's fun watching his excitement and his interests and skills expand!  ... Show More

    Highly Recommend!

My kids’ favourite after-school activity! They learn about applied science, engineering, technology and math in a fun and interactive way, as well as develop their creativity by designing, sketching and drawing. They bring home a lot of their work and it’s always something cool and new (eg. laser engraved portraits, animation flip-books, 3D-pen made Eiffel Tower, marshmallow rocketship, etc.). Drop in classes are great and schedules are stress free. By the end of each session parents receive a short video where the children talk about what they have done. We recommend Steamoji to our friends and some of them have already signed up. ... Show More

    Director's Message

At school, my older son was often afraid of trying new things for fear of making a mistake, of being wrong. I thought this was terrible as I haven't achieved anything significant on my first attempt. It usually takes a series of attempts - of trial, failure, success and iteration - to build anything of significance.

I wanted to expose my two sons to design thinking and maker skills to address this, but struggled to find a solution. I was overwhelmed by the number of project options available on Amazon (try searching for 'STEM kits'!). My sons enjoyed projects at local maker spaces over Summer camps, but where was the progression when they showed an interest in learning more?

An entreprenuer at heart, I started working with a group of other parents to try to come up with a solution. This is how Steamoji was born.

“Quite simply, I am building Steamoji to better prepare my sons to proactively take on the challenges of their future.”

    Let's get building!

    Hank Horkoff,
    Co-Founder & CEO

    Staff and Counsellors

Steamoji was founded by Hank Horkoff, a father with 2 pre-teenage sons. He wanted to expose them to STEAM skills. He tried doing it himself, but got overwhelmed when searching for ‘STEM kits’ on Amazon with thousands of options. He tried Summer Camps at local maker spaces, got his children excited, but then had no way for them to continue to nurture that interest. An entrepreneur himself at heart, he recruited a talented group of other parents (sharing similar frustrations) and a network of subject matter experts to bring Steamoji to life.

THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF THE STEAMOJI CURRICULUM

As apprentices move through our 400-hour Build to Solve curriculum, they’ll complete Missions across four key pathways: Fabrication, Physical Computing, Engineering and Digital Arts.

Each Mission includes a series of smaller projects that are designed to teach apprentices to master a key skill or concept within the pathway they’re currently working on. This format helps kids to develop a strong foundation of STEM knowledge while simultaneously sharpening their brainstorming, planning, and problem-solving skills.

      Subject Pathways

Fabrication: This pathway is all about designing and building physical structures through both additive and subtractive methods, such as 3D printing and laser cutting.

Physical Computing: This pathway is about combining coding with machines to create interactive and intelligent systems that can perform real-world tasks, such as robots and technological devices.

Engineering: This pathway explores science and math in a fun and interactive way, teaching apprentices to create physical structures that perform tasks and solve problems, including simple and complex machines.

Digital Arts: This pathway shows apprentices how to use digital tools to channel their creativity and transform their ideas into engaging content, such as animation and game design.
