This course further extends students’ skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English for a variety of everyday and academic purposes. Students will make short classroom oral presentations; read a variety of adapted and original texts in English; and write using a variety of text forms. As well, students will expand their academic vocabulary and their study skills to facilitate their transition to the mainstream school program. This course also introduces students to the rights and responsibilities inherent in Canadian citizenship and to a variety of current Canadian issues. While on campus, mornings and evenings are devoted to the work around the course; afternoons are spent in recreational camp activities on our waterfront and campus, with the opportunity to develop or refine skills in the great outdoors, including overnight camping trips. Students will also go on weekend excursions to Canada's Wonderland and Treetop Trekking - quintessential Canadian experiences!
Character Development: This program helps build the following traits
Courage: Immersed in practical, collaborative experiences, students gain confidence and fluency in English through working with others and challenging themselves. Completing outdoor adventures together require students to confront new experiences and increase social interaction.
Physicality: In this program, students are physically active--hiking, paddling, portaging, sailing, climbing--in order to make learning English a full body experience. Students will learn paddling, camping and bushcraft skills through outdoor adventures, including a camping trip.
