Creative Writing: Grades 3-5

About this course

The purpose of creative writing is to teach students skills to introduce them to creative writing elements and styles that they can in turn apply to their own real-world writing. Writing is far more than correct spelling and grammar. In creative writing, students will learn to make writing more enjoyable for the reader and themselves, and will have opportunities to create a portfolio that showcases all of their best stories!

• Historical Fiction
• Fables
• Poetry (Haiku, Acrostic, Concrete, Limericks, Sonnet)
• Journalism (News Article, Op-Ed, Longform Video Piece**)

Materials & Homework

• ** Students will be asked to write a script for a longform journalistic report on the topic of their choice.  If possible, they will need a smartphone or tablet to use as a video recording device, but if this is not possible they may submit the script only
• Additional materials to be provided by the teacher
• 40 minutes of writing homework per week (20 minutes of class time will be allotted for homework completion with teacher support
