    The Our Kids review of Drayton Entertainment Youth Theatre Programs

    our take

    From the iconic and award-winning live theatre organization, Drayton Entertainment, comes a program that gives youth exceptional theatre training. As a non-profit charitable organization, they are one of Canada’s most successful professional theatre companies. You may know them from their tenures at many acclaimed theatres and playhouses throughout Ontario. The Academy’s mission is to foster a life-long appreciation in performing arts in the youth they teach. This includes developing the core values of respect, creativity, growth, and accountability. The environment is diverse and inclusive and one could even say, loving. Kids learn confidence in themselves and as performers, with empowering exercises that push the kids to be their very best selves. For those so inclined, kids can take their performing arts training a step further with audition learning opportunities, which help them learn to move forward from failure and accept the challenges they are presented with.

  • Meet the Staff

    Director's Message

    David Connolly is the Associate Artistic Director of Drayton Entertainment and Head of the Youth Academy. He is a Director, Educator, and Disability and Inclusion Advocate who is deeply committed to changing the statistic of being the only amputee to have performed on Broadway. He has collaborated with artists including Katy Perry, Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, Elton John, Sarah Jessica Parker, kd lang, Patti LaBelle, Sarah Brightman and many others.

    As an Educator, David has been an Adjunct Professor and Advisor to the Musical Theatre Performance Programs at Sheridan College, Randolph College, Fanshawe College, St Lawrence College, VanderCook College and most recently, the Hopkins Centre for the Arts at Dartmouth College. While on the faculty at the famed Stagedoor Manor Performing Arts Training Centre in New York, his students included Natalie Portman and Bryce Dallas Howard.

    David holds an Honours Bachelor Degree in Musical Theatre Performance from Sheridan College, is a recipient of The Ontario Premier’s Award of Excellence, The Waterloo Region Arts Award for Lifetime Achievement, and an Ambassador for both The War Amps’ Child Amputee Program (CHAMP) and The Shriners Hospitals for Children.

    For Drayton Entertainment, he helmed over thirty productions including the Canadian regional theatre premieres of Kinky Boots, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Mamma Mia! and Newsies. For the screen, David has directed and choreographed several series for CBC Kids including their newest live action series, “Ukulele U.”

    Rentals & Services

    Offers children's birthday party packages: Yes
    Celebrate your birthday with us by starring in a Broadway Musical Production Number! You and your BFFs will spend your party with a director/choreographer who will teach you the music and choreography to a production number and direct you all in a scene from the show! All participants will get to take home the sheet music and scene! The birthday child and up to 11 friends will spend time playing theatre games, acting, dancing and singing! Then, enjoy the show-themed décor while the guest of honour opens their presents and hosts an “insta-famous” photoshoot in front of our glittering Broadway birthday backdrop wall. If you have any questions about celebrating your birthday at the Academy, please reach out via email!
