We focus on skills for students who think differently, learn differently and who therefore struggle to find success in traditional academics. Through building skills of metacognition and understanding which tools and strategies to use in different learning situations, students with ADHD and learning exceptionalities (and those without), can find success and feel confident in their learning. Our educators are experts in helping students identify, learn and apply individualized strategies that complete a learning profile students can use as a tool for self-advocacy. The confidence students gain when they realize their unique potential and have the skills to maximize it is the real key to success.

The Our Kids review of Devenish Educational Consulting & Summer Camp

    our take

Offering educational counseling and coaching, Devenish Educational Consulting helps kids reach their full potential. Their goal is to create empowered, confident kids through courses that focus on executive functioning, study skills, and the individual student. Kids who think and learn differently often struggle and this program was put in place to stop the struggle. What’s different about this program is that it empowers kids to do for themselves, rather than adults doing it for them. Coaches help students to identify their strengths and weaknesses, and then apply some key strategies they are taught. Kids gain confidence and that confidence snowballs into success academically and in life. Founder Kelly Devenish was a high school guidance counselor, and had a passion to help families. That is evident in her approach and one could say she is the teenage whisperer. The services at Devenish Educational Consulting are super valuable for parents of teenagers who may have lost their way and need support.

    Very Relatable

Kelly is very relatable, making it easy for my son to feel understood and supported. Finding out he has ADHD and teh struggle he's been dealing with was a shock ut she really helped us organize our priorities, try out various approaches to find out what worked and then formulate a plan that we could all adhere to. Kelly's willingness to share from her own experience also helps normalize the situation and make it less daunting. Kelly bridges the gap between what the parents can provide and what the school offers to ensure kids are fully supported during critical transitions. She made us feel that we were not alone and there was definitely a solution ... Show More

    Awesome

Kelly Devenish is awesome, truly awesome. Our Grade 12 son has ADHD and was really struggling with organizing his school assignments and studying- he felt overwhelmed and defeated. Kelly came to us as a referral so we started weekly sessions with her in September. Kelly was able to work with my son to provide a game plan for success and a pathway to university. Our son never once complained about going to see Kelly, which was a miracle in itself- he looked forward to the sessions and spending time speaking with her about the challenges and obstacles he had encountered that week. Kelly gave him hope and instilled confidence in his abilities that put a spring in his step we haven’t seen in years. I highly recommend Kelly and her services. They were a game changer for our son and our family ... Show More

    Exemplary Connection and Communication

We feel so privileged that we found Kelly through the executive function summer course that she conducted. Kelly was marvelous at communicating with our 11 year old (now 12) son and also with ourselves. As parents, she gave us a breakdown every day of what was taught and what issues she had specifically noted with our son and gave us corresponding advice. After the four-day course ended we decided to continue on with private executive function sessions, as our son has prominent gaps in his decision-making and is a particularly challenging child to parent. The communication from her to us remains exemplary. Our son, who generally is quite suspicious of adults, has come to trust Kelly and he enjoys his hourly sessions with her-she makes things fun and relatable. She has tailored the sessions specifically to our child's needs and if something particular comes up that we think as parents needs to be addressed on an emergent basis she will be sure to incorporate that into her next session. Very quickly, within a few weeks, she understood our child’s needs even better than we as parents did (which was a great relief after advocating for him as parents in the public school system for years and not getting very far at all). Kelly ‘gets our son’, and for that, we are so grateful ... Show More

    Director's Message

My passion to help students and families was the driving force behind all that I achieved and continue to seek out in education. Educational Leadership was a goal of mine to be able to impact positive change and help more students and families and while that experience helped me understand how greater educational systems support students and families, I learned that my passion is still working with young people to help them discover and unleash their inner potential to be able to navigate their future with confidence, build resilience and understand that success in school and in life comes from understanding who they are, how they learn, what resources are available and how to harness them for maximum benefit.

My aim with Devenish Educational Consulting is to provide the best support in 4 main areas:

    1. Executive Functions Skills and Strategies

    2. Post-Secondary Exploration and Applications

    3. Career Exploration

    4. Education Advocacy

It is no longer acceptable for any of us to expect young folks to figure out how they learn best on their own.  Many students need explicit strategies, direction and guidance every step of the way.  If this is provided, it pays off in dividends with increased resilience, independence, problem-solving skills and confidence.

Beyond high school, there are more options available to young people than ever before and while this choice is exciting, it can also be very overwhelming.  I work with young people to understand what they value in a post-secondary experience, what they understand about where their post-secondary education can lead them to in the world of work, and how to use targeted research strategies to get all of their questions answered so they can proceed with post-secondary applications with excitement rather than anxiety. I understand what post-secondary institutions are looking for in applicants and how to express those nuances through supplementary applications.

Understanding the world of work can be tricky from the perspective of a teenager. Many young people I meet still list what we understand to be flagship careers (teacher, doctor, engineer, firefighter, lawyer etc.) as careers they have considered. These options are great however, like an iceberg, there are far more opportunities, experiences and fields than ever before. The ongoing world of work continues to favour those who can demonstrate a variety of skills and competencies.  Understanding these skills will benefit young people no matter what career field they embark upon.

Parents of students with unique learning needs often still have to rely on our schools to lead the way in meeting those needs and still helping our children to progress and achieve.  While parents are the experts and knowing their children, I help bridge the gap between parents and schools to help everyone understand the specific strategies that do and do not work for the child, tools that the child might need to help them learn equitably, and systems and processes schools can adopt to ensure the child is supported consistently and in ways that promote ongoing transparency and communication with families. Creating learning profiles, transition plans and processes that help the school, the parents and the child feel supported during the child's education.

Devenish Educational Consulting is all about supporting individual needs of each child. That is why we keep class sizes extremely small (6 students) and why we offer one-on-one coaching both in person and virtually.  Reach out today, to find out how I can help your child elevate their approaches to learning.

    Staff and Counsellors

Kelly has over 20 years experience in public and private education as a teacher, guidance counselor, board-wide program coordinator and Vice Principal in both secondary and elementary schools. With an M.A. in Educational Leadership and Administration, she has a deep understanding of the systems that support students from Kindergarten through grade 12. Her work as a guidance counselor and a board-wide guidance coordinator allowed her to work on a province-wide leadership team helping students discover their passions, develop their skills and understand opportunities available beyond high school. Kelly has worked with families to help navigate supports for their child's unique needs and helped students learn the skills of self-advocacy.
