(5) Overall experience
Codezilla is an excellent summer camp. The staff was kind, and our son had fun every day. He learned and had lots of time to play outside. As a parent, the location was perfect, with an easy drop-off/pick-up, and a quick walk to the subway, so I could still make my way to work at a good time. Highly recommend this for parents looking for something different for summer camps, it’s the perfect mix of coding and outdoor fun. Plus the hot lunch was a big hit.
(5) Reason for choosing the camp
We had a friend recommend this as our kids wanted to do a camp together. So glad we were told about it. The two kids played together and made new friends. The price is reasonable compared to what you can pay for camps in this city. The website is easy to use and signing up is a breeze.
(4.5) Program quality and activities
My major concern was that our son would be inside all day on a computer, this is the opposite of what we were trying to accomplish in a summer camp. However, the camp does a great job of getting the kids outside. There is a park close by and lots of time to enjoy the weather. A perfect mix of both.
(4.5) Social dynamics and experience
Every child seemed to be on the same page, nobody felt left out. The group was a good mix of ages but there was no concern of individuals being made to feel less than the more experienced kids at the camp. We had one issue with a child commenting about our son’s learning disability. But I feel it did not come from bad intentions.
(4.5) Skills and growth
The presentation of his group's project was perfect. It helped get my son out of his shell a bit. They worked in groups, and although our son may have been one of the beginners he felt like he really accomplished something worthwhile with the project. It was a good feeling for him. You don’t get that from all summer camps.
(4.5) Staff/Instructors/Counsellors
Every instructor seemed to really know the subject. As a parent, you really understand that these are usually summer jobs for the councilors. But the thing is these kids seemed like they actually liked their job, and it wasn’t just a way to get some extra beer money. When the councilors like the job, the entire camp is a happier place.
(5) Advice and tips
Be prepared to sign up for next year's camp on time. Once we did one week and our child loved it, we were sure to get the camp he wanted for the following year. The weeks have unique subjects, so he wants to get in early to get exactly what you want. Also, sign up for the hot lunch, our son was a big fan.
