Grades 4-5 Creative Writing

Grades 4-5 – 1x per week – July OR Aug.

Our creative writing program enables students to engage with various types of imaginative writing — an experience that inspires students to expand their ideas of what the written word can accomplish. Far from being a cursory overview, every 2-hour class will delve into a different genre of creative work: ranging from short stories to personal essays, plays, and poems.

Students will get a chance, under expert guidance from experienced teachers (who are published authors), to workshop their own inventive, original texts — using nothing but a keyboard. The goal is not only to show the different mediums that provide a distinctive shape and structure to language, but the course also will ensure students improve their writing skills as they learn to craft stronger sentences and understand how best to organize their imaginative thoughts.

Taught by instructors who know how to hone the power of words, the course opens up possibilities for students who wish to explore the creative language arts as a true art form. Students will consider the techniques used by established writers to see literature in a different light, with a focus on the specific choices, tactics, and motives used by authors. This course will encourage reading comprehension skills that will be beneficial in all English Language Arts settings.
