This program is for young sailors aged 8-14 who have successfully graduated from Green Fleet, as determined by coach recommendation. It is also for those who have some prior racing experience. Sailors should enjoy time on the water and and are ready for a more competitive approach to their racing - while having fun, of course! It is an excellent opportunity to further develop their racing skills, and of course general sailing skills with CANSail levels being awarded when appropriate skills are mastered.

This youth program consists of a core eight-week program operating Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm during July and August. Spring and Fall training is also strongly encouraged, available weekends, 11:00a.m. to 4:00 pm. Junior membership to ABYC is included for those participating in a full season.

Centered on the training camp atmosphere, sailors will train with an experienced race coach and will begin to develop advanced sailing skills, learn racing rules, tactics, strategy, regatta preparation, and race fitness. Once mastered, these skills will earn the participant's their CANSail Levels, 3, 4, 5 certification. Sailors are taught in racing Optimists, the international youth racing standard. At this level, students are encouraged to invest in their own equipment. However, If you do not have a boat, a charter hull may be available. Race Team members will have the opportunity to compete at various regattas in the white/blue/red championship fleets as determined by their age. Coaching fees for local regattas* are inclusive, however, registration fees for regatta host clubs are the responsibility of the sailors.

Note:

-This program requires approx. 4-6 weekends of travel and demands a considerable level of commitment from both sailors and their parents.

-Parents are responsible for chaperoning their youth and for transportation of their boat and equipment. Club trailers are available and parents who tow will be reimbursed for travel expenses.

-Regatta fees and travel expenses (transportation, lodging, and food) are not covered in the program fee.)

-Sailors need their own boat. A limited number of charters are available under section A11

*Additional fees may be necessary for "fly away" regattas such as coach per diem food/accommodation and coaching fee (subject to number of participants etc.)

Covid -19 Please note, at this time, proof of vaccinations are not required. However, regulations continue to evolve, and Covid related protocols will be in place in accordance to TPH and Government guidelines at the time of the program - these will be followed, and updated, as necessary.

Refunds are subject to a 3.5% fee. Non-Covid related refunds within 30 days of program start date are subject to review.

Character Development: This program helps build the following traits

  • Independence: Although they are always supported by their coach, racers sail single-handed (one per boat) and as such are responsible for all of the decisions they make out on the water! They learn to be independent quickly!
  • Responsibility: Racers learn to manage their own boat, (charters available) and equipment and are responsible for rigging and maintaining their boat on a day to day basis. In a race, they are ultimately responsible for the state of their equipment and for the decisions they make!
